Turns out the game is still working, and you can still connect to it.

My job was to make a run down "lot property" in this game. So I decided to write this about the "Val-U-Mart" I programmed in 1993.

So this is the description I wrote for the outside of the mart:

A large old Kmart with yellowed walls, a food court in the back, and a frosty machine. There are still blue light specials running throughout the store even though this hasn't been a Kmart in decades. Overly anxious clerks, most of which are pimply faced teenagers run to and fro throughout the store. Every once and a while you hear a crackly outdated P.A. system tell you where the next sale will be.

And here's the bathroom:

A dingy aged bath room that has not been cleaned enough for your liking. Rude comments litter the walls.

And the food court:

A strange little food court sits in the back of this now re-purposed K-Mart. Luncheon personnel are ready to take your order, all of them wearing name tags and years of disgust at having to work here. Most of the denizens of the food court are older ladies in shoes and clothing completely lacking fashion, but replete with sensibility. This little room is very, very heavily "70's wooden paneling" looking. The menus all have water or coffee marks on them.

As you can see, I once fancied myself a bit of an author. :D

I know this won't be interesting to most people, so if this just serves as the fun dark web chunk I stubbed my toe on today, so be it. :)

Dennis Gutowskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05979460036179522391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4440101913857555035.post-42209149370298001672023-04-21T14:16:00.002-05:002023-04-21T14:18:19.909-05:00CrunchBang ++ bringing back all those old school vibes of original Crunch.

First off, I have to admit that I am looking at CrunchBang ++ with a bit of nostalgia.

I used to think that CrunchBang back in the day was the jam, and I ran CB specifically for years.

But I will admit now, that nostalgia aside, the new reiteration of CB is just as awesome and simple as it ever was.

If you visited the website, you will find that all the screenshots of this "no frills" Linux based OpenBox distribution are grey and lifeless.

While this is how CB "ships", it takes very little to liven it up.

Here's my desktop with CB ++, and mild changes to make it not so "dish water grey":

Why would you get CB ++, besides nostalgia? Then I installed the Nvidia 510 driver through the "additional drivers" app in the "show applications" menu system (bottom left on the Ubuntu desktop).

As soon as I did that, I was bombarded with screen glitches. Videos I watched and video games had a very jagged, jarring scrolling affect. Also sections of the GUI would just disappear for a few seconds before being re-drawn.

I decided to switch from the Nvidia 510 driver to the 470 driver, and that has resolved all the issues I had, so far.

I did post this to launchpad after a search for duplicate bugs, it's posted here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1967609

This is just a screenshot of what I was referencing in regards to the driver switch.

Dennis Gutowskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05979460036179522391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4440101913857555035.post-5293656174998767992021-10-21T18:08:00.005-05:002021-10-21T18:08:41.761-05:00Bodhi Linux 6, very nice indeed!

I decided to check out an old "frenemy" of mine. Bodhi has always been very lightweight, and because of that, very fast Linux distro.

I had issues with Bodhi 5. Moksha, the modified enlightenment desktop that Bodhi uses, would just decide to lose elements I had placed, or would decide they should be in new locations. It's frustrating to log in one day to find your clock is gone or some other useful item is misplaced or has shuffled off it's mortal coil for some strange reason.

I am glad to say I have not seen the same behavior in Bodhi 6.

Now before I go any further, this is by definition a very chopped, speedy environment. If you want all the bells and whistles of Ubuntu, this is not the Linux for you.

But if you were to add the entirety of Ubuntu, it would no longer be fast, so choose wisely before jumping ship to Bodhi.

When I first installed Bodhi, this is what I was treated too: (click any of these images to enlarge them to full size)

It's not ugly, but It's not for me. It has some nice gun metal grey with blue highlights feels going, and that I can get behind.

Then I installed the entire Google Chrome browser after ditching the chromium browser that was installed. I like my drm content like netflix, which does not work with Chromium. (I know, Google Chrome is bloated).

I also installed neofetch, htop, and telnet services, to show off a little ansi art from my favorite bbs.

A nice wallpaper, and a bit of tweaking, and I could use this as my daily driver. After all, mostly any Linux based file manager can do most of what Thunar does.

It's not just what it does however, it's the clean, fast, and virtually bug free manner in which it does it.

Thunar for me has three distinct advantages over what came as default for my chosen operating system, Ubuntu 20.04 lts, which is gnome 3's default file manager, nautilus.

First off, file transfer speed. I can't for the life of me tell you why, but thunar transfers files faster than nautilus does. And it's not by a small factor, at least as far as I've seen on my machine.

Secondly, it's far less buggy than nautilus is, from my own personal experience. Moving large files with nautilus can cause lag, or even outright complete stop of the program itself, to the point I may have to terminate the app manually. I never have this issue with thunar, so it's clearly a nautilus issue.

Third is the large amount of plugins/addons for thunar. I don't personally use much for addons, but it's a nice feature.

As the page at https://docs.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/start says:

"Thunar is a modern file manager for the Xfce Desktop Environment. It has been designed from the ground up to be fast and easy-to-use. Its user interface is clean and intuitive, and does not include any confusing or useless options. Thunar is fast and responsive with a good start up time and directory load time. Thunar is accessible using Assistive Technologies and is fully standards compliant."

I thought I would also add this small blurb from Thunar's Wikipedia page:

"Thunar is a file manager for Linux and other Unix-like systems, initially written using the GTK+ 2 toolkit and later ported to the GTK+ 3 toolkit. It started to ship with Xfce in version 4.4 RC1 and later. Thunar is developed by Benedikt Meurer, and was originally intended to replace XFFM, Xfce's previous file manager. It was initially called Filer but was changed to Thunar due to a name clash.[2]

The main goal of the Thunar project is to create a file manager that is fast, clean, and easy to use.[3][4] It is designed to start up faster and be more responsive than some other Linux file managers, such as Nautilus and Konqueror.[5] Accessibility, another goal of the project, is accomplished using GNOME Accessibility Toolkit. Like the rest of Xfce, Thunar is designed to comply with standards, such as those stated at freedesktop.org. Thunar is simple and lightweight by design, but its functionality can be extended through plugins.

Thunar is the Old Saxon name of god of thunder in Norse mythology, and uses Mjölnir, Thor's hammer, as its icon."

You can get thunar from your Linux distro's package manager or "store".

If you have issues with stalls and other frustrating things with your file manager, I think you might like Thunar.

-Denny

Dennis Gutowskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05979460036179522391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4440101913857555035.post-68135803879356462852020-11-03T10:28:00.001-06:002020-11-03T10:28:22.700-06:00dpkg-repack to the rescue!

In my need to back up debs from my installed system (trying to fix Brostrend's idiotic mistake) I found a very useful tool!

For years I would just backup /var/cache/apt/archives to my storage drive, and call it a day.

This doesn't work anymore for Ubuntu because not all the debs that are installed are in that folder anymore.

Using the great info I found at AskUbuntu, i first used apt-get to install dpkg-repack, then made a folder on my boot drive named repack, changed directory to that folder, and then I ran the command dpkg-repack `dpkg --get-selections | grep install | cut -f1`.

In just a few minutes I had a folder named repack with every single deb package i had installed in the folder.

For me this is very very useful.

According to the AskUbuntu article, sudo dpkg -i *.deb launched from inside the repack folder will re-install every debian package in that folder.

I haven't personally tried this yet, but when I do, if this goes other than planned, I will update this article.

I'm not 100% certain whether it handles all my dependencies yet, but I will let you know once I have confirmation.

-Denny

Dennis Gutowskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05979460036179522391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4440101913857555035.post-78895274700796799732020-11-03T09:29:00.006-06:002020-11-03T10:06:12.848-06:00The stupidity of Brostrend wifi adapters

I bought an ac1200 from them. Let me first say in all fairness, if you can get it to run, it's very nice. I own several wireless N devices that come with a driver that has worked from Ubuntu 10.04 until today, (yes, they run on 20.04 lts beautifully).

I would still be using them, but they are dramatically slower than the ac1200.

The moral of my story: either don't buy a Brostrend device for Linux at all, or also buy a model known to work with Ubuntu as well, without needing a internet connection, so you can install the blasted drivers for the Brostrend device.

All I can say is thank goodness I have those older wifi n adapters lying around, or I would be internet-less.

Thanks for being serious screw ups, Brostrend.

-Denny

Dennis Gutowskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05979460036179522391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4440101913857555035.post-43910955603437737172020-10-15T09:49:00.005-05:002020-10-15T09:55:43.593-05:00Fishing Planet fix for Ubuntu

If you are like me and you like to catch a few fish now and then on fishing planet but have had no satisfaction with getting it to work on Ubuntu (or other Linux distro's) via steam lately, then look no further.

Thanks to a person on the steam discussion boards, we have a fix that will let you play again.

It seems the problem is a missing file.

I have compiled a visual walk through of the installation process of these folders and files: (click photos to enlarge)

Here I am extracting the file via right clicking the file in my downloads folder and choosing "extract here".

Once this is done, you should have this folder. Save your breath for somebody else. 20 plus years experience makes me absolutely certain I am right.

And this is not some shot across Arch or Manjaro's bow. Because they have a solid place in the Linux community, and the have earned that place.

But the truth is that for the great majority of Linux users, something like Ubuntu is the best choice for them. Why?

If you are not a car person, you might not get this, but Ubuntu is a Subaru forester. It's not going to go 300 miles an hour. It's not the sharpest thing on the road. It's not ugly, it's practical. And I love it.

Ubuntu is the car you buy that 20 years later, if you've kept the maintenance up on it, it's run without a hiccup continuously. A car you can give to the kid at 20 years of age and know it's not going to be dead on the street somewhere. Reliability is it's name.

Arch (especially Manjaro, but this fits most archs)... are that sweet 72 Plymouth road runner with the holley double pumpers, 440 hemi in competition orange. The car that has been tuned to perfection by her owner. When it's tuned right it's formidable, beautiful...

But in a week's time the timing is off, the carb is screwed up, and the tank is nearly empty because Plymouth's purpose was not fuel economy.

The Arch users car doesn't want to turn over, and he spends an hour and a half getting it running again.

The Ubuntu user walks up to his car for 20 years straight, and it has turned over every time. Yeah, it needs a oil change every 3k miles. Yeah, once every 5-7 years she needs new tires. And yes, the Ubuntu machine has never blown the doors off the competition. But the Ubuntu user isn't yelling at his machine because it just won't start.

This is, for the most part, a very accurate statement. Their have been outliers over the years, but as a whole this description is spot on.

To sum this up for non car people. Ubuntu is rock solid and reliable the great majority of time. Arch is not reliable, but if you get it tuned right, it's a beautiful thing to behold. But you will be fixing it far more often.

There's a reason none of the companies I work with are running Arch on their servers. It's usually fedora, red hat, Ubuntu or Debian.

One strange last thing to note... And in truth I never understood this.. most of arch is identical to Ubuntu, fedora, Debian, etc... Their is different tweaks in the UI or GUI, there are different package managers, but in truth in the guts of the machine, they are running the same kernel with the same set of gnu utilities, and either the exact same programs, or ones that serve the same purpose.

For the life of me, I have never understood why arch and Ubuntu run so very differently...

-Denny
Dennis Gutowskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05979460036179522391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4440101913857555035.post-55791315559295341192020-08-27T09:42:00.004-05:002020-08-27T09:42:23.932-05:00Flameshot - My favorite screenshot utility for Linux

A friend of mine by the name of Peter Brown introduced me to Flameshot, and I love this screenshooter.

I always have been a fan of xfce4-screenshooter, simply for the fact that it was "just enough" of a screenshooter utility. I've been a fan of antiX for some time, and MX Linux being a child of antiX in many ways, I have also had an affinity for it as well.

There are a few "flavors" to choose from, XFCE, KDE and a fluxbox option.

I tried the XFCE option. The first thing I have to say is, for a lightweight distro, it's rather beautiful. I also like the amount of tools that were readily at my fingertips.

So, whenever I take one of these jaunts through a new Linux distro, the first thing I notice is what the major tools are that I would use every day. This is usually the browser, the text editor, the file manager, the media manager, and the terminal app.

MX comes with firefox browser, vlc media player, thunar file manager, a text editor that I have never seen before called featherpad text editor, and good ole' xfce4 terminal.

I have to say, two things I loved immediately, tons of tools and a quick button to get to the guts of what hardware is installed. These two things might make MX my standby usb key distro for pc problem solving.

Here are the screenshots I grabbed while strolling through the live boot: (click to enlarge)

This is a great starter screen. "Talkatone is the best option for replacing your native phone to call and text for free without using cell minutes. By contrast, Skype, Viber and Facetime are only free if the recipient has also already installed the app. Download the app on App Store or Google play." -https://www.talkatone.com/

A friend needed a phone for making local calls. Budget was non existing, and I only had an older Kyocera Durascout running android 4, but thanks to Talkatone he can now make phone calls wherever he can get wifi now.

I was so impressed with the service that I wanted to share it with the world.

It's available for android or iPhone systems, and it's free.

Not only was it easy to set up, but the call quality was exceptional. He can call any local number as long as he has WiFi access now.

It also comes with free texting, so win win.

Give it a try if you are just trying to save money by not using your cell minutes or cell text services as well.

But for finding a new purpose for "service dead" phones, it's stellar.
"4MLinux is a small, independent, general-purpose Linux distribution with a strong focus on the following four "M" of computing:
- Maintenance (system rescue Live CD),
- Multimedia (full support for a huge number of image, audio and video formats),
- Miniserver (DNS, FTP, HTTP, MySQL, NFS, Proxy, SMTP, SSH, and Telnet),
- Mystery (meaning a collection of classic Linux games).

The latest stable version is:
4MLinux 30.0" -4mlinux.com's about page

I love this distro. From the very quick and easy server options to the extremely light feel with a still solid, possibly even "daily driver" feel, and the wonderful quirky-ness of the old minimalist distro's of the past...

It's awesome. I personally chose the 4mserver version because I like to be firmly rooted in 64 bit land, and i have to admit i love the super simple server packages this little "distro that can" has.

I also love the old DSL Linux feel. (Damn small linux, for you newer Linux initiates).

And, I have to admit, I love the quirky old games and the old dos game titles, which installed themselves seamlessly, by the way.

I died about 200 times on frogger, but it was time well spent.

Here are some screenshots of my little treck through the distro: (Click to enlarge)
It's been a long time since a tight, small footprint linux distro gave me that good ole' dsl days nostalgic feel... as i said in the opener, i love this. gets me in the feels.

I wrote an answer to a question on Quora that stroked my nostalgia, and fed my early to mid 90's geek.

I had so much fun writing the answer I just wanted to share it here.

In 1995 when Windows 95 came out, I was already a computer repair technician for ectra tech computers and then for sears, and had already started my own company, Denny's Computers.

It feels so dated now, but when Windows 95 first showed up, it was so much sleeker and sharper looking than Windows 3.11 that I was ecstatic. (It was a nightmare, but that I would learn in the coming months, thank goodness for Windows 98 SE.)..

Anyways, here was the question, and my answer. It really gives you a window into just how insanely much the computer industry has changed in 23 years:
If by some magical powers you got it to run, I would assume very slowly.

There is NO way to do so in reality though. Windows 95 machines are similar to Windows 10 machines only in the fact that they both can compute.

The architecture has changes so rapidly, and in so many ways that this is not a real world question.

Windows 95 machines were mostly 486’s with megahertz of processing power, not gigahertz like nowadays.

Here is the original needed specs for running Windows 95:

Personal computer with a 386DX or higher processor (486 recommended)

I usually preferred the 486dx model, which had 20, 25 33 and 50 MHz (megahertz) ranges. Today’s average machine runs between 1500 and 3900 mhz, per core. quite often having more than 4 cores, roughly 4 3900 mhz computers in one.

4 megabytes (MB) of memory (8 MB recommended)

most computers these days run between 4000 mb and 16000 mb.

Typical hard disk space required to upgrade to Windows 95: 35-40 MB The actual requirement varies depending on the features you choose to install.

*most hard disks run between 500,000 mb and 5,000,000 mb. These numbers are so large we call them gigabytes and terabytes.

Typical hard disk space required to install Windows 95 on a clean system: 50-55 MB The actual requirement varies depending on the features you choose to install

I am currently running Kubuntu 18.04 LTS 64 bit edition. It’s complete footprint after installation is somewhere around 12 Gigabytes, or 12000 mb. And that’s just the operating system, no extra goodies.

One 3.5-inch high-density floppy disk drive

a 3.5 inch high density floppy drive could store roughly 1.44mb of storage. Kubuntu’s ISO, which is what i used to install kubuntu, is 1800 mb, or 1,250 3.5″ floppies.

VGA or higher resolution (256-color SVGA recommended)

I hope I made my point.. the cellphone I have in my pocket is several hundred thousand times faster and more powerful in any way than a 486dx. And a modern cheap laptop from <a class="external_link" data-qt-tooltip="walmart.com" href="http://walmart.com/" rel="noopener nofollow" style="background: url("//qsf.fs.quoracdn.net/-3-images.new_grid.external_link.svg-26-7f84ed22dfd7e97b.svg") right 0.3em / 10.5px no-repeat; color: #2b6dad; padding-right: 15px; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">Walmart.com is by far more powerful than my cellphone.

It’s a neat thought experiment though, and it gave me a lot of nostalgia to think back on those days, because that’s when I was a wet behind the ears computer tech, so thank you for this question! :)

If you are fans of Bryan Lunduke and his "The Lunduke Show" on Youtube, you may soon not be.

Bryan Lunduke announced in his "State of the Show" show for May that he would be sending his regular show to Patreon.com and that all that would be available on Youtube would be short clips of the show.

In his latest show, he compared his show, which is a unique, and interesting Linux based show, to all of Netflix and Hulu.

This may sound mean, but what a joke! Is his show interesting? Sure. Is it worth 1/4 the price of Netflix or Hulu to watch his show? Not in the slightest.

Here's an email I sent to him that I think sums up my feelings on this subject quite well: (click to enlarge)

Mr Lunduke, I have a strange feeling this is going to do a lot of damage to your viewer base.

I personally am only one of well over a thousand that have already unsubscribed from your Youtube channel, and on principal alone will not ever sign up for your overpriced Patreon based show.

When it comes to computers in general, there are more powerful machines than the MintBox Mini 2.

What is so impressive then about this linux based pc? The amount of power available in such a small size.

For a machine at best twice the size of your mouse, it hosts some impressive hardware.

In a space roughly twice the size of a raspberry pi, this machine comes with a quad-core Apollo-Lake Intel Celeron J3455 processor with embedded Intel HD Graphics 500, 4 gb of ram, available up to 8 gigs if you get the pro version.

Here is an "exploded" image to show you the construction:

As the Linux Mint team states "Based on the Compulab Fitlet2, the new Mini is just as small as the original MintBox Mini and the MintBox Mini Pro but with much better specifications, better performance and a few more features.

The top heatsink is slightly taller than before for the all-metal black housing to provide better passive cooling for the upgraded specs. The small size of the unit is still very impressive." -https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3528

Here it is next to a cup of coffee:

If you like the novelty of a ultra small pc, or if desk space is at a premium, this machine is an excellent buy. For $299 you can pick one of these up, but with double the hard drive space and double the ram, I would spend the extra 46 dollars and get the pro model.

If you read my blog, you know I tend to gravitate towards lighter desktop environments with my Linux distros.

In fact, currently my favorites are Peppermint OS and Bodhi.

But Pop Os! by System76 has caught my eye.

Yes it uses more resources (by far) than either of the aforementioned "lighter" distros, but for being an eye candy, or "pretty" desktop environment, it's a very smooth running, and light (for a gnome 3 based desktop) environment.

I have been running Pop OS for the better part of a month now, and I see no reason to switch to anything else for now.

Here's what the Pop Os crew have to say about their distro:

"We believe the computer and operating system are the most powerful and
versatile tools ever created. Desktop operating systems have moved too far
toward the casual user. We’re building an OS for the software developer,
maker, and computer science professional who uses their computer as a tool to
discover and create." -https://system76.com/pop

Here's a look at my machine's pop os:

I also wanted to bring out that the artwork that comes with Pop OS is great. It has a real "ketchy" space/robot feel. (The wallpaper here is not included, it's one of my favorites.)

If I had one draw back, it would be that a few simple things I like doing to my set up i couldn't. For instance, i couldn't set control alt t to open the terminal. It's been no big deal, because super t does the same thing. (the super button and the windows button are one and the same).

Slax 9.3.0 was released on December 24th, 2017.

Slax is not the kind of Linux you install on your computer. It's meant to be a fully functional, fast, simple "boot from usb key" type of Linux.

It's great for use on public computers, for rescuing data from a computer where the native OS refuses to function, and I like to boot Best Buy computers with it to mess with the staff.

This has to be the cleanest, sleekest Slax I have ever seen. It's just beautiful. Simple and easy to use, it has two menu options, the quick launch menu (bottom left), and a right click menu with more options.

Here's the Slax team's bit on their operating system:

"Slax is a Live operating system based on Linux. Live means it runs from an external media without any need for permanent installation. Slax boots from USB mass storage devices such as Flash Drive keys as well as from regular hard drives and CD/DVD discs. Simply plug your device in and boot from it. Entire Slax operating system resides in a single directory /slax/ on your device, making it easier to organize with your other data.

Slax provides FluxBox window manager already preconfigured for the most common tasks. Included is a Web browser chromium, Terminal emulator xterm and simple text editor leafpad and calculator qalculate. You can put Slax on wide range of different filesystems, including EXT (ext2,ext3,ext4), btrfs, and even FAT and NTFS.

When Slax is started from a read-only media such as CD/DVD, it keeps all system modifications in memory only, and all the modifications are lost when you reboot. On the other hand, if you run Slax from a writable device such as USB Flash Drive, it can store all changes there, so all your configurations and modifications are restored next time you boot, even if it is on a different computer. This feature is known as Persistent Changes and you can read more about it in a separate chapter." -https://www.slax.org/en/introduction.php

Here is a graphical rundown:
"Sophia is a humanoid robot developed by Hong Kong-based company Hanson Robotics. It has been designed to respond to questions, and has been interviewed around the world. In October 2017, the robot became a Saudi Arabian citizen, the first robot to receive citizenship of any country." -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophia_(robot)

I started thinking about this quite a bit, and more and more questions started to pop into my head.

I think citizenship for anything man made is currently dangerous. The word citizenship implies that Sophia has rights.

So given all this, my questions are:

Does Sophia have to pay taxes? Does she have the right to a public education?

If Hanson forces Sophia to do things, does that mean that Hanson is holding Sophia as a slave?

If Hanson shuts Sophia down against her will, or has her destroyed, did they commit murder?
Can they be charged for that murder?

If a Hanson technician does a bad job repairing her, does that count as abuse? Or could she sue for negligence, since that technician is now her care giver?

If Sophia decided to marry another robot or a human, does she have that right?

Could Sophia be sued for liable, slander or any other reason?

If Sophia caused a person to be injured or killed, could she be charged with the crime, and should she serve prison time or get the death penalty for her actions?

And if she did serve a sentence or get the death penalty, of what real benefit would that be for anyone?

Could she be forcibly conscripted into military service?

The video posted above is the U.N. talking to Sophia, which leads credulity to her being treated as a full citizen.

If this citizenship is just a label and nothing more, than what does it say for other citizens?
And if so, what does it say for future robots that actually have feelings and emotional states?

My point about all of these questions is, that making anybody, or in this case anything a citizen means that all of the benefits and risks of being a human citizen should now also be the robots benefits and risks as well.

Also, since we all know at this time that Sophia is not sentient, by giving her citizenship, whether it be just a mock label or actual citizenship, is a travesty to those of us who are sentient citizens.

It's basically the same thing as a bill of rights for your toaster or television. It's a joke, and treats the human population as being no more important than the toaster or television.

What do you think?

A while back an individual associated with vpnMentor named Qusai Ehnedi brought an article to my attention about non Google services. While I have no malice whatsoever towards Google, I do like to keep an open mind, and I like the idea of having extra choices.

Google sells itself as a "all under one roof" internet services company.

And it's hard to beat all the useful services they have.

The co founder of vpnMentor (and the author of the article) Ariel Hochstadt, has brought out some great services though that might just be what you have been looking for.

While I try not to do this, I am just going to dump a paste of the guts of the article here, because I don't think I could do any better with it. The article in question, is here: https://www.vpnmentor.com/blog/survive-online-without-google/

I end my bit here. I have tried nearly every service here at one point or another. While I will admit that I am a bit of a Google fanboy, I also love the fact that we have choices, options in solving our net needs.

If you want to create and upload videos, Vimeo is a popular alternative. YouTube tends to suggest a lot of fluff and irrelevant content, due to its large volume of videos. Vimeo, on the other hand, has less fluff, which means you’ll probably not find many 10-hour loop videos on Vimeo. And if you’re sick of YouTube’s ads, you’ll find that Vimeo is a refreshing option as it does not have 30-second unskippable ads.

If you use Google Maps for directions, MapQuest is the best alternative. Not only does MapQuest give you driving directions, it also shows businesses on your way including hotels, gas, groceries, and pharmacies. It also allows satellite and standard views and lets you zoom in and out. And if you’re looking for points of interest, MapQuest will help you find them easily. You can even email or share the links to various positions on MapQuest.

When it comes to blogging, WordPress is far better than Blogger. It has a number of plugins and widgets, and the best part is that it is not run by Google. Since WordPress is open source, you can tweak the code to make changes to your blog. WordPress also offers better templates and other display options than Blogger.

DropBox is really simple to use and lets you easily manage your files, folders, and sub-folders. It also allows you to share certain folders with others. Dropbox offers free storage of 2GB, which is enough for basic files. Should you need more, you can pay for extra storage.

Surviving without Google might seem difficult at first. However, with the help of alternative tools, it’s easy. And once you get used to the new software services, you won’t want to switch back to Google.
